When Does Your Child Need an Extraction?

Certain situations may warrant a dental extraction for your child’s primary teeth. For instance, tooth extraction may be necessary to get rid of severe tooth decay. This is especially true if dental fillings and pulpotomies fall short. An extraction may also be necessary if your little one has severe abscesses underneath their teeth.

Basic Extractions

We offer simple tooth extraction for all visible teeth, specifically the canine and incisors. All our extractions are handled by licensed pediatric dentists sometimes with the presence of an anesthesiologist. Our process is simple, fast, and effective, and should be over in more than 20 minutes.

Wisdom Tooth Extractions

We also offer wisdom tooth extractions for teeth located at the end of the mouth. These are typically complicated, but your dentist I'll make a small incision on the gums to get direct access to the roots and extract the tooth. The process will be painless and quick just like with basic extractions.

What to Expect During Your Child’s Dental Extraction?

Evaluation

The first step in pediatric dental attraction involves evaluating the condition of your child’s teeth. Dentists typically don’t recommend premature tooth extractions, since they can cause problems with speech and dental development. They’re usually a last resort when other treatment options prove inadequate. After evaluating your child’s teeth and taking X-rays, the dentist will decide whether an extraction is necessary or not. If necessary, they’ll create a treatment plan to ensure a successful extraction.

Anesthesia Administration

Next, the dentist will inject lidocaine or epinephrine into the gums near the affected tooth. This numbs the gums and surrounding areas to ensure a painless procedure. The choice of anesthetic depends on your child’s age, health, and dental condition. The dentist will proceed to the next step only after the anesthetic kicks in completely.

Extraction

After anesthesia, the dentist will use an elevator to loosen the tooth from its sockets. Primary teeth have shallow roots and are easier to loosen than permanent ones. After loosening the tooth, the dentist will grab it with a pair of forceps loosening it further before finally pulling it out.

Post-Op Care

Your child will likely experience bleeding after the extraction. The dentist will ask your child to bite into a cotton gauze to stop the bleeding. They’ll also prescribe painkillers to manage the pain, and antibiotics if they suspect a bacterial infection. Lastly, the dentist will give your instructions on taking care of the child’s wound until healing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I Extract My Child’s Tooth By Myself?

plus icon

No, extracting your child’s tooth without any dental expertise is a recipe for disaster. You may subject your child to a lot of unnecessary pain and put them at risk of bacterial infection. Tooth extraction is a complicated procedure that could take a turn for the worst without a professional dentist handling it.

Will Your Child Feel Pain After a Dental Extraction?

plus icon

Pain during a pediatric dental extraction is almost non-existent. That’s because dentists will inject a local anesthetic into the affected teeth to numb the region. What’s more, the roots of primary teeth are shallow and don't extend deep into the jaw, making the process faster and much less complicated.
