Why Should You Bring Your Child In for Dental Cleanings and Exams?

The most significant benefit of routine dental cleanings and checkups for your child is to keep cavities at bay. Remember, about 40% of school-going children have cavities, and yours could be among the lot.

You should bring your child to their first dental appointment by the age of 1 or within 6 months after their first tooth emerges, whichever comes first. Early dental visits help establish good oral hygiene habits and allow your dentist to monitor and address any potential issues.

What Are the Benefits of Your Child Getting Regular Cleanings and Exams

Safeguards Your Child’s Dental Health

Regular dental cleanings and exams keep your child’s dental health in check for the long haul. Kids might not use the right brushing technique when brushing their teeth, leaving food and plaque deposits in their mouths that promote tooth decay and gum disease. Dental cleanings get to these areas, ensuring optimal dental health.

Encourages Proper Oral Hygiene

Dental education is an integral part of dental checkups and cleanings. The dentist will educate your child about the importance of maintaining proper oral hygiene and the best way to do so. This will form a good foundation for them to maintain the right oral hygiene habits throughout their lives.

Saves You Money in the Long Run

By identifying dental issues early on, these pediatric dental checkups can save you a bundle in the long run. The dentist will check for signs of dental decay, gum disease, and other issues and solve them before they get out of hand. This will save you a lot of money in the future.

What to Expect During Pediatric Dental Cleanings and Exams

Dental Examination and Cleaning

After welcoming you into our clinic, we’ll get right on your child’s case. We’ll examine the child’s mouth, teeth, and gums. This involves using a small mirror to check the tooth’s surfaces, behind the teeth, and inside the mouth. We’ll also look for signs of cavities and gum disease.

Dental Cleaning and Polishing

After the examination, Dr. Prieve will use a scaler to remove plaque, Tatar, and debris from your child’s teeth. Scalers contain a pointed end allowing the dentist to get between the teeth to clean them. Once clean, Dr. Prieve will use flavored toothpaste and a soft-bristled rotating brush to polish your child’s teeth, removing stains and giving them a fresh feel.

Fluoride Treatments and Sealants

Dr. Prieve might recommend a fluoride treatment if you consent to one. The treatment involves applying a fluoride varnish on your child’s teeth to form a protective layer against cavity-causing bacteria. Alternatively, you can settle for dental sealants, which achieve the same purpose without the added benefits of remineralizing your child’s teeth.

Should I Take My Child to a Dentist Before the Teeth Emerge?

plus icon

Yes, you should take your child to the dentist even before they have their first teeth. Not only will the dentist ensure the first teeth come in correctly, but they’ll also give you information on dental complications that affect infants and how to avoid them. The earlier they visit the dentist, the better it is for their dental health.
